How Red Light Therapy Works
Light is energy. Your mitochondria are listening.
Red light therapy — the technical term is photobiomodulation, or PBM — uses red and near-infrared light in roughly the 600 to 1060nm range. Research suggests that light in this window is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondria, which supports cellular energy (ATP) production and downstream cell signaling.
Where does inflammation fit? Inflammation is a normal, necessary phase of recovery. The evidence suggests PBM supports the body’s normal inflammatory response and its progression toward repair — it is not a switch that turns inflammation off, and we won’t pretend it is. Red vs Near-Infrared: How Deep It Goes

The Dose Math
Why Model Numbers Are Marketing
A bigger panel name doesn’t mean a better dose.
Dose is the part most brands hand-wave. It’s simple arithmetic. The energy delivered to your tissue — measured in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²) — is a product of how intense the light is and how long you sit in it.
J/cm² = mW/cm² × seconds ÷ 1000
Run the numbers: a panel delivering 100 mW/cm² at a stated distance, used for 300 seconds (5 minutes), delivers 30 J/cm². That is the only honest way to compare devices. A “2000” in a product name tells you nothing. What tells you something: irradiance at a stated distance, the wavelengths used, and coverage area. Demand those three. Sports-PBM research generally works in a window of roughly 20–60 J/cm² per area for surface fluence, though total joules per muscle group is the more rigorous basis for large muscles.

Safety Checklist
- Protect your eyes. Use the included eyewear or keep eyes closed when facing the panel.
- Mind the distance. Red and near-infrared light is non-thermal at the recommended distance — don’t crowd the panel.
- Skip NIR before bed. Near-infrared within 90 minutes of sleep may disrupt sleep quality — use the Sleep preset.
- Photosensitivity matters. If you take photosensitizing medication or use photosensitizing skincare, check with a professional first.
