How Red Light Therapy Works

Light is energy. Your mitochondria are listening.

Red light therapy — the technical term is photobiomodulation, or PBM — uses red and near-infrared light in roughly the 600 to 1060nm range. Research suggests that light in this window is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondria, which supports cellular energy (ATP) production and downstream cell signaling.

Where does inflammation fit? Inflammation is a normal, necessary phase of recovery. The evidence suggests PBM supports the body’s normal inflammatory response and its progression toward repair — it is not a switch that turns inflammation off, and we won’t pretend it is. Here’s what the research describes at the cellular level.

Red and near-infrared photons are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Research suggests this absorption supports electron flow and ATP production — effectively giving the cell more available energy to do its work. This is the most cited proposed primary mechanism of PBM (Hamblin 2016; de Freitas & Hamblin 2016).
Beyond ATP, the literature describes brief, low-level shifts in reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide that act as cell-signaling messengers. These signals are proposed to influence gene expression tied to the cell’s response to stress and its movement toward repair (Hamblin 2016).
In skeletal-muscle research, PBM applied around exercise is associated with support for the body’s normal recovery response and reduced markers of exercise-induced muscle fatigue and damage (Leal-Junior et al. 2015). The framing matters: this is about supporting normal resolution and repair, not eliminating inflammation or treating any disease.
Different wavelengths reach different depths. Red light (630–670nm) is absorbed more superficially — relevant to skin, collagen, and surface tissue. Near-infrared (810–1060nm) scatters less and reaches deeper — relevant to muscle, tendon, and joint tissue. A single-wavelength device picks one lane. PBM research is promising but still developing, and results vary with dose, wavelength, and device. The honest position: red light therapy supports normal recovery processes. It does not cure, heal, or treat any medical condition or disease, and it is not a replacement for medical care. Anyone framing it that way is selling, not informing.

Why Model Numbers Are Marketing

A bigger panel name doesn’t mean a better dose.

Dose is the part most brands hand-wave. It’s simple arithmetic. The energy delivered to your tissue — measured in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²) — is a product of how intense the light is and how long you sit in it.

J/cm² = mW/cm² × seconds ÷ 1000

Run the numbers: a panel delivering 100 mW/cm² at a stated distance, used for 300 seconds (5 minutes), delivers 30 J/cm². That is the only honest way to compare devices. A “2000” in a product name tells you nothing. What tells you something: irradiance at a stated distance, the wavelengths used, and coverage area. Demand those three. Sports-PBM research generally works in a window of roughly 20–60 J/cm² per area for surface fluence, though total joules per muscle group is the more rigorous basis for large muscles.
