Red Light Therapy in Your Recovery Routine

What it is, how to set it, and how to use it safely. No miracle claims, just settings, dose math, and a routine you’ll keep.

“Recovery is a routine, not a rescue. Set the distance, set the time, show up again tomorrow.”

How Red Light Therapy Works

Light is energy. Dose is how much you deliver.

Red light therapy, the technical term is photobiomodulation, or PBM, uses red and near-infrared light in roughly the 600 to 1060nm range. Restore panels deliver it at eight wavelengths, as part of a recovery routine.

Where does it fit? In the routine, not the rescue. Red light belongs in a routine you repeat, not a one-off fix. Here’s what actually sets a session.

Irradiance is the light power landing on your skin, measured in mW/cm². It is always quoted at a distance. Restore panels are manufacturer-reported at 165 to 219 mW/cm² at 6 inches, and the number drops as you back up.
Time multiplies irradiance into dose. Most sessions run 10 to 20 minutes per area. Set the timer and let it run. Longer is not automatically better.
Light spreads as you move away from the panel, so the same time at 12 inches delivers less than at 6. Pick a distance, use the same distance every session, and your dose stays consistent.
Different wavelengths reach different depths. Red light (630 to 670nm) is absorbed more superficially, at the skin and surface. Near-infrared (810 to 1060nm) scatters less and reaches deeper, toward muscle and joints. The depth diagram below lets you see the difference.
Red light is one part of a recovery routine. It is not medical care and not a replacement for it. If you have a medical condition, talk with your doctor before you start.

Red vs Near-Infrared: How Deep It Goes

Toggle the wavelength. Watch where the light lands.

Penetration is scatter-based: longer near-infrared wavelengths scatter less in tissue, so they reach deeper. Toggle between RED (660nm) and NIR (850nm) to see how depth changes across skin, muscle, and joint, then watch a session run from setup to repeat below.

RED 660nm is absorbed more superficially, concentrated at the skin and surface. Pick RED for surface targets.

How Dose Actually Works

Intensity times time. That’s the whole equation.

Dose is simple arithmetic. The energy delivered to your tissue, measured in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²), is a product of how intense the light is and how long you sit in it.

J/cm² = mW/cm² × seconds ÷ 1000

Run the numbers: a panel delivering 100 mW/cm² at a stated distance, used for 300 seconds (5 minutes), delivers 30 J/cm². The numbers that decide your dose: irradiance at a stated distance, the wavelengths used, and coverage area. Know those three. RECON’s starting window is roughly 20 to 60 J/cm² per area at the surface. For large muscle groups, RECON doses in total joules per group instead.

Reactive vs Proactive

Most people reach for recovery only after they’re wrecked.

Showing up flat is a load you carry into the next session. The proactive frame builds light into a routine you run before and after training, not a fire extinguisher you grab once you’re wrecked.

Reactive

Train hard → ignore recovery → stiffness and fatigue stack → compromised next session

Proactive

Train hard → light + recovery routine → same settings, every week → a routine you keep

“Recovery isn’t rest. Recovery is preparation.”

8-Wavelength Restore Panels

Eight wavelengths. One system.

Recovery doesn’t live at a single depth. The Restore line runs a dual-chip, 8-wavelength system so red and near-infrared are delivered together, surface and deep, in one session.

8 Wavelengths

Red + Near-Infrared, Together

630 / 650 / 660 / 670 / 810 / 830 / 850 / 1060nm

Dual-chip LEDs pair a red and a near-infrared wavelength in each diode, (630+810), (650+830), (660+850), (670+1060). The result: superficial and deep targets covered in the same exposure, instead of choosing one lane.

  • Red 630 to 670nm: skin and surface
  • NIR 810 to 1060nm: muscle, tendon, joint depth
  • 1060nm: the deepest, lowest-scatter wavelength

Individual dimming, pulse, and mode control

Each wavelength dims independently from 1 to 100% and pulses from 1 to 10,000 Hz. Run RED only, NIR only, or ALL wavelengths. Preset scenes cover the common cases, including a Sleep preset that disables all near-infrared for sessions within 90 minutes of bed.

How to Use It Safely

Simple, consistent, and honest about limits.

A practical starting framework. Distance and time govern dose, start conservative, and stay consistent.

Starter Framework

Step Action Detail Time
01 Distance Position the panel ~6 to 12 inches from the area -
02 Mode Pick RED, NIR, or ALL Surface = RED · deep = NIR · both = ALL -
03 Session Expose the target area One area at a time, eyes protected 10 to 20 min
04 Cadence Repeat across the week Consistency beats one long session 3 to 5×/wk
05 Evening Switch to Sleep preset NIR disabled within 90 min of sleep 20 min

Safety Checklist

  • Protect your eyes. Use the included eyewear or keep eyes closed when facing the panel.
  • Mind the distance. Red and near-infrared light is non-thermal at the recommended distance, don’t crowd the panel.
  • Skip NIR before bed. RECON’s rule is no near-infrared within 90 minutes of bed. Use the Sleep preset.
  • Photosensitivity matters. If you take photosensitizing medication or use photosensitizing skincare, check with a professional first.
  • When in doubt, ask. If you’re pregnant, managing a medical condition, or unsure how this fits your situation, talk with your doctor before starting.

The RECON Performance System

Red light is one pillar of three. RECON sequences recovery as a system, Compression → PEMF → Red Light after training and the reverse before it, because no single modality covers everything stress demands from the body.

01
Sequential compression, the mechanical layer of the routine.
02
PEMF mats with preset frequencies, built for recovery and wind-down sessions.
03
Red and near infrared light, 8 wavelengths, set by distance and time.
